Register your child at the nearest Sri Lankan Embassy and obtain a Consular Birth Certificate
Registration of your child's birth at the nearest Sri Lankan Mission or obtaining a birth confirmation letter is useful under all circumstances. Please contact your nearest Sri Lankan Diplomatic Mission, consulate and obtain a Consular Birth Certificate or Confirmation Letter. Such registration is required to prove that your child was born abroad and the parents were living abroad at the time of child birth. However, please note that Consular birth Certificate does NOT give rights to Sri Lankan citizenship. We have observed that many parents only obtain the Consular Birth Certificate from the Embassy assuming the process is over. This would be a costly mistake as child never gets the Sri Lankan citizenship unless the child birth is registered under Citizenship Act in Colombo. If you are living in a country where there is NO Sri Lankan Diplomatic Mission or Consulate, please contact us we will assist you how to obtain Consular Birth Certificate.

What is Certified Copy

A Certified Copy is a Copy of Original Document carrying an endorsement confirming that it is a true copy of the Original document. It does not certify that the Original document is genuine, only that it is a true copy of the Original document

Why do I need a Certified Copy

People often need a Certified Copy of original Documents for bank loans, tax purposes, court purposes, foreign election, foreign jobs, and education or to replace original Documents that were lost or destroyed.

In some countries, if a copy of the original to be accepted it  may have to be in the form of a notarized copy rather than a certified copy. A notarized copy may be more expensive to obtain. A copy of a document to be used internationally may also have to comply with special rules - Hague Convention Abolishing the Requirement of Legalization for Foreign Public Documents.

LEGALIZATION OF DOCUMENTS

WHAT IS LEGALIZATION?

Documents issued in one country and need to be used in another country, must be "authenticated" or "legalized" before they can be recognized in a foreign country. This is a process in which various seals and signatures are placed on the document. It is generally performed by validation of the signature on a document by an authority which is higher in hierarchical terms.

For example, if a Birth Certificate issued in Sri Lanka to be recognized in the UK , it has to be first legalized by the Ministry of External Affairs in Colombo. Once legalized by the Ministry of External Affairs, the documents then need to be reviewed and endorsed  by the consular staff of the UK High Commission in Colombo to be fully acceptable in the UK. Often certified translation is required for full legalization. The process is used routinely in international commerce and civil law.
